Youth Mentoring Activities: Dear Parents/Youth/Community: Here are excellent opportunities for youth to let your voices be heard, while gaining leadership experience, cultural awareness and developing social skills. Free Workshop Sexually Transmitted Infections As you might be aware, Maywood (& Proviso) is a high risk area for STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections). (Note: The health department has replaced the term "STD" with "STI" to be inclusive of HIV/AIDS.) Our workshops are being conducted by a team of nurses from Loyola U. connected with the Proviso East School-Based Health Center under a special awareness grant. We urge you to send/bring your female child to the July 13 workshop to increase awareness. Of course, we promote abstinence as the first choice. LOCAL YOUTH PROGRAMS Enjoy a family outing at the Zoo! Enjoy a day at the zoo for FREE. The Maywood Youth Mentoring Program, Inc. is a partner with the Brookfield Zoo’s Family Zoo Pass program. The Family Zoo Pass allows up to 8 persons to attend the zoo free any day of the week with free parking for up to two cars! The pass must be picked up 1 day in advance of your scheduled zoo visit and returned the following day. Children’s Zoo Admission is free November 1 to March 1. Free general zoo admission is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, including Thanksgving Day, through February. Additionally, Saturdays and Sundays are free in January and February. Children 2 and under are free. Car parking is $8. NOTE: District 89 Schools (708-450-2000) also participate in the Family Zoo Pass program. Free passes available upon request. Contact B. Cole @708-344-3577. Babysitting Certification Class Babysitting Certification Class for kids ages 11 to 15. This is a nationally recognized course taught by the American Red Cross. This course is designed to teach important information on interviewing for a babysitting job, choosing safe and age-appropriate toys and games, performing first aid, diapering and feeding techniques, handling bedtime issues, and other tips for safe babysitting. Lots of take-home material will be handed out for future reference. This is a wonderful opportunity for young teens and preteens to learn the basics about babysitting and childcare.
